After Broncos' latest comeback, Payton pushes for stronger starts


 

Broncos Rally From 16-0 Deficit to Beat Rams 30-26

The Denver Broncos overcame a disastrous first half to produce a stunning second-half comeback Sunday night, defeating the Los Angeles Rams 30-26 at Empower Field at Mile High.

Denver entered halftime trailing 16-0 after managing only 67 net yards of offense. Quarterback Bo Nix completed just 6 of 12 passes for 53 yards during the opening two quarters, while the Rams controlled much of the game.

The second half was a completely different story.

Nix helped ignite the Broncos' comeback with three second-half touchdowns—two through the air and one rushing. His performance marked his 10th fourth-quarter comeback victory since the beginning of the 2024 season, the most in the NFL during that span.

Denver's defense also played a crucial role. Safety Talanoa Hufanga intercepted Matthew Stafford twice in the second half, including a 66-yard interception return for a touchdown. Broncos coach Sean Payton described the play as the "play of the game." Denver also recorded three of its four sacks of Stafford after halftime.

Despite the comeback, the Broncos were heavily outgained. Los Angeles finished with 482 total yards compared with Denver's 257 and ran 80 offensive plays to Denver's 62. However, Denver's defense repeatedly came through in critical situations, limiting the Rams to just one touchdown on four red-zone trips.

The victory improved Denver's record to 2-1. The Broncos are also now 2-0 in one-score games this season after going 11-2 in such games last year.

Payton praised his team's resilience but acknowledged that Denver cannot depend on dramatic comebacks every week.

"I'm pleased with how we responded," Payton said, while stressing that the team's slow starts must improve.

The Broncos' ability to finish games has quickly become a defining characteristic. Nix described the team's late-game success as part of its "DNA," but Payton remains focused on improving the opening stages of games.

For Denver, the 30-26 victory provided another example of its ability to overcome adversity. However, the Broncos will need to start faster and avoid falling into large early deficits if they want to maintain their momentum as the season progresses.
