With the game tied late, Chambliss faked a handoff and raced 14 yards against the grain, beating LSU safety Ty Benefield to the pylon for the go-ahead touchdown. Ole Miss then added a two-point conversion to move ahead by eight points with 6:14 remaining.

The Rebels successfully drew LSU offside twice while preparing for the conversion before JT Lindsey scored on a direct snap from half a yard out.

LSU still had an opportunity to force overtime. Sam Leavitt led the Tigers on a 69-yard drive that reached the Ole Miss 6-yard line. However, Leavitt missed an open Zach Grace on third down. LSU's comeback had gained momentum after Ty Benefield's blitz forced Chambliss into a hurried throw that was intercepted by Ja'Keem Jackson. Leavitt then scrambled for 10 yards before scoring on the following play to cut Ole Miss' advantage to 24-14.

After Ole Miss missed a 53-yard field goal, LSU moved even closer. Leavitt connected with Ole Miss transfer Winston Watkins Jr. for a 26-yard touchdown, with Watkins making an impressive leaping catch near the right corner of the end zone to make it 24-21.

The Tigers later lost star tight end Trey'Dez Green to a right knee injury after a first-down catch in Ole Miss territory. LSU eventually tied the game with a field goal, setting up Chambliss' decisive fourth-quarter response.
